Thanks to both of you for your reinforcement. After writing my blog entry I had wondered whether I had been a little intemperate or unreasonable.

I'm not sure what pain News Ltd inflicts upon its readers. I don't especially care what they do. But I care about The Age, because ... I care about The Age. I feel a little sad that The Age's "polite" advertisers aren't getting my clicks because their "rude" ones have (as a direct result of The Age's advertising team/management decisions) turned me away.

By comparison the New York Times, for example, doesn't torment its readers in the way that The Age does. And on the Internet, I'm not comparing The Age with the SHun.

(And yes, ads that pop up and float over articles are about as bad as unrequested audio. I must be lucky to have missed out on them recently, but they are just as loathesome.)

There are two things that allow the lighthouse circuit to be completed in a day:

* The large majority of the walk is on a well made road: so your feet are spared (except when you deviate off the road: an option well worth taking up at two points along the way), and

* Whilst there are hills, there's nothing very mountainous (except for the fact that at the back of your mind, you realise that the longest, highest climb you are going to face all day is going to be the last half hour, climbing back up to the Telegraph Saddle car park as the sun is setting just as you are feeling most worn out.

A very solid slog, but not a death march.

I'll post a longer description of the walk with photos later.... for the time being I need to get my printer working to print a picture of the lighthouse to take along as a 'show and tell' item for my French discussion class this afternoon.

#Dale: Unfortunately, the only way to get any real indication that your EPIRB failed is to set one off... and then fail to get rescued.

Of course, the device does have a very comforting "Test" button. You press it and a light goes off that tells you that the little test light works. Allegedly it also sets off the local signal used to triangulate to where you are sitting over the last 100 metres or so: but not having any radio triangulation equipment, I can't test that. I don't think that the button tests the critical component: communicating your location via satellite.

BTW: the other system I described in my main posting (the SPOT system) can (as well as setting off an emergency alert) also send "I'm OK" messages to friends with your location (via SMS or email). It's a good scheme, but it comes with a yearly subscription, and the emergency system isn't the standard one. I tossed up before deciding which system to buy. http://international.findmespot.com/
